Has anyone else found that their optical output has stopped working since the latest software update from Apple

Since the last software update from Apple my optical output has stopped working and I wondered if anyone else had the same problem.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The last software update downloaded from Apple, when the message "there is new software etc" appeared a couple of weeks ago. Not sure exactly what the date was. I am running Snow leopard 10.6.8 on an early 2008 iMac and the optical output is the sound output.

It was working perfectly well before that update was installed but has not worked since. I wondered if anyone else had the same problem or whether it is something exclusive to this machine.

Your audio settings may have been changed.

Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.

Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.

Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
