Q: iMac memory upgrade!

I have a 21.5 inch iMac (mid 2011) and according to apples support I can only upgrade to 4x4Gb RAM. I have 2x4 + 2x8 and that works fine?! I need to upgrade to 4x8Gb. What's the deal?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

According to MacTracker, your machine has these specs. Note that Apple says only 16 GB supported, but they claim it'll work w/32 GB, so install them and see what happens.

Maximum Memory32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

8 GB modules were not as prevalent in 2011, so Apple did not test them at the time. Often people discover after the fact that the machine will support a higher specification of RAM, but Apple does not go back and edit the product specs. This is common across most Apple models.
