I recently upgraded my iMac from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and now I get the start-up chime, but beyond that, my internal speakers aren't being recognized. According to my system prefs there are "No input devices found".

You would need to check output devices in system preferences for built in speakers, not input.
You can try a pram reset:
Power off the computer, power back on and hold the following keys before the start chime, OPTION, COMMAND P, R (no commas)
Contunur to hold the keys down till you hear the start chime for a second time, then release.
See if that helps.

A PRAM reset will usually correct both sound and visual deficiencies.
Thanks for trying, but zapping the NVRAM (Intel Mac version of PRAM) did not help. 😟
