when i hit power button my mac goes to sleep but it wasnt like this before

I'm not sure what you would like the function of the power button to be when the MacBook Air is awake ...


Anyway, you can turn sleep off by going to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the Menu Bar) and selecting "Energy Saver". Check through the tabs there for the various boxes you have to uncheck to get sleep turned off.
