my ipod wont turn on

The screen on my ipod nano went black while I was using it and I couldn't get it to show again. I've tried holding down the power and volume down buttons at the same time (I've tried several times and have tried holding it down for longer than 30 seconds and even for two minutes, but nothing happened. I've tried to restore it but the first time I tried it didn't work and subsequent times now it just won't even register when I plug it into itunes. I've tried restarting my computer, I've tried just waiting and leaving it plugged into the computer for power. It does get very hot when I leave it attached to the computer. Any ideas for me?
