Battery with exclamation point ...

Hello,
Apple says that the "Battery with exclamation point mainly happens when the battery needs to be recharged." I experienced this battery with exclamation point on my 6-hours old ipod today. I charged it with the power adapter, after purchase, and it said charged after 4 hours, and I could navigate through the different empty files. I then installed the software from the CD that comes with the ipod, rebooted my computer, connected the ipod to PC, itunes started and I could see the ipod icon in itunes, then it said: "attempting to copy the disk "myname IP" failed. The disk could not be read or writthen too". I found this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267, that explained the probable causes. Meanwhile, my ipod was still connected to my pc and then suddenly this battery with the exclamation point was displayed a second or two, then ipod backed out. No respond at all. I connected iPod to the power adapter to charge it but still couldn't see anything coming up on the display.
What now?
