Which MacBook you have? There are some MacBooks that can't transfer audio through Mini DisplayPort, so in that case, it's normal that your MacBook doesn't transfer the audio. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
If you have a Late 2008 or Mid 2009 MacBook Air, you can't transfer audio. If you have a newer MacBook, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and see if the TV or an external device appears listed. If so, select it. Another option is to replace the adapter you are using
