Updating ipod touch issue

I updated my ios 4 ipod Touch to the latest version, and as a consequence all my apps were deleted. When I went to add them back (i.e. twitter, facebook) I got the message 'This app is incompatible with this ipod touch'. So how do I get the apps back on??!! They were on there before I updated. And I can't upgrade it to an ios 5. So it's practically useless now.

It seems that I have encountered the same problem as fitnesschick2013. I have Ipod Touch iOS 4.2.1 and got fed up with these messages which told me that I can't download a certain app because it requires a newer version of iOS. So I found this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972. Though, I have to say, that I quite didn't understand these steps. So, on the way upgrading my iOS, I started with restore'ng my iPod. The whole process took 10 minutes. I was ready to have a completely empty iPod but that didn't bother me, as I knew that after upgrading my iOS I can download any kind of Apps. But in the end my iPod's iOS stayed the same - 4.2.1. And now I have lost all my music and video files. What did I do wrong? According to the given page I must have a chance to upgrade my iOS. Please, help!
