im trying to pair my appletv to my computer but its telling to click on the appletv icon with "click to setup"next to the device list. why is the device list located

Do you mean pairing the Apple TV's remote?
You need to see the Device list in iTunes if this is a silver AppleTV1.

In current iTunes you may need to show the sidebar using the View menu in iTunes.
