I've had 4 kernek panics in the last 24 hours. I've made a back-up and unplugged everything. Apple replaced one ram card when under apple care but that has expired. Any trouble shooting help would be welcome.

I would like to see one of your kernel panics. To access to them, open Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and look for panic.log in the sidebar, which is in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Copy the whole kernel panic
Next time a kernel panic occurs, copy and paste the text in a reply.
The only way to run Apple Hardware Test on your Mac is to boot from its orginal Applications Install DVD. Start the Mac with that disc inserted while holding the d key.

Do you have any peripheral plugged? If so, unplug them. They may be the cause of the problem.
If it doesn't work, run an extended test in Apple Hardware Test as said above and see if it gives you any problem. Maybe a part like the RAM is failing, and it's a common reason why kernel panics show up
I've tried several times to run a hardware test with the original install DVDs (both 1 & 2) by starting up with the D key held down. It either beeps with #1 or boots normally with #2 (no HT). ?

If you don't want to repair the iMac yourself, take it to an Apple Store or reseller. It could be a RAM problem
OK 3 tones, pause, 3 tones etc, so I have a RAM issue. There are 2 cards of 2g RAM - as stated I replaced one earlier on a d.i.y. replacement from Apple. Simple process. So should I just go get another card of the same RAM and try it?
Get other RAM and try again. You can get RAM from OWC or Crucial > http://www.macsales.com
