I tried the suggestion by Texas Mac Man.  It doesn't work. One thing that would be helpful. When you, this goes for everyone, are providing a solution and you are giving step by step directions, please state Mac or PC, iTunes version and iOS device. Apple is coming out with frequent updates to iTunes and iOS and although the solution might have worked on an older version of iTunes or an iOS device, it doesn't mean it will work with the newer stuff.  When you are creating directions please state what you are using to help create the directions.

With that said, I tried the directions offered by Texas Mac Man on iTunes 12.4 and on iPad Air running 9.2.3. This is a student iPad.  After you open iTunes and connect the iPad you are hit with a message about the iPad being in a lock state.  No way to get around that message except to put the iPad in recovery mode. Next, you will be hit with a message Restore and Update. Again, you don't have a choice. Next, iTunes has to go out and download the latest software. Next, once that has finished, the iPad will start to restore and update itself.  Once this process starts, you have to let it finish. There is no X to cancel out of the process and you don't get any Xs to cancel out of anything.  Unfortunately, you have to let the process finish.

If someone has a different experience than me, please share the information.  We all can learn from each other.
