Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I am travelling overseas using various WiFi suppliers. I can receive but not send e-mails via my mail.bigpond.com server. Is there a way I can reconfigure mail to get ariund this problem?
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.1)
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the account.
Tap SMTP line under Outgoing Mail Server.
Under Outgoing Mail Server, make sure you have username & password.
Tap Authentication and set to Password.

Many thanks for this response. The settings you mention are in place. I gather the problem has something to do with the Port that mail.bigpond.com uses. Apparently the WiFi servers think that any mail using the particular port is SPAM and therefore it gets blocked.
Try port 587 for outgoing mail server.

Many thanks Chris setting 587 seems to have solved the problem.
