How do I get my IMac to just recognize the external drive?

I have a Toshiba external drive that when I connect it to my IMac it immediately starts Time Capsule. How do I get my IMac to just recognize the external drive?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

if you don't want to use the external drive for time machine backups, then simply go into your system prefs/time machine and turn it off that way it will stop trying to backup to the drive.

also to make the external drive show up on your desktop go into finder/preferences/general and place checkmark next to external drives

can also make it show in the finder sidebar in this same preference pane.
