Updated from what to what? How? Which iMac? More details needed.
Thank you for your reply to my question.
My iMac is: iMac 7.1
OS is : OS 10.6.8
I have Intel 2.4 GHz Intel core,
Hard drive is 4 GB 667 Hz DDR2 SD Ram
Do you need serial number?
Update - After recent OS update, number pad works.
CD - still work via ITunes
When I place blank DVD+RDL DVD there is no response; DVD then ejected.
I wrote iwork (word version) files to a DVD+RDL ( 8x; 8.5 GB); when placed in slot, no response, then
DVD ejected.
I welcome any thoughts or suggestions. I don't now subscribe to Apple Support. Should I contact them, using the $40.00/problem fee(or so I heard)?
Thank you in advance for your help!
PS - Screen is 20 inches, if this helps.
Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
Reset I reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM. Initially was able to read my 'burned' text file DVD.
Tried to read it again (just checking) - unsuccessful (DVD not shown on desktop). When I open
DVD player app, get error message, "Supported Disc not available."
System Preferences: What do I set when 'burned' or movie DVD is inserted. I believe I should open iDVD
when I load blank DVD.
Thoughts or suggestions from here?
Thank you for your suggestions and efforts.

Thanks for those settings, which I copied.
Still, however, when I load blank DVD or burned DVD,
the disc symbol doesn't appear on my desktop, DVD Player
doesn't open, and I don't get a query about what to do with my
'burned' DVD (which has text files).
I tried to re-load Snow Leopard OS from the DVD I have: Nothing!
I went to disk utilities, for the hard drive, repaired disk permissions,
then verified them (using disk utilities) all successfully.
Do you or does anyone else have suggestions about how to proceed?
Is there a way to check DVD hardware? Do I need to do that? I'm lost...

If the resets didn't work, then get a optical disc cleaning disc and try that. As for hardware checkers, you could try the Apple Hardware Test program, but AFAIK, it doesn't check the optical drive. If those fail, time for an Apple repair station visit.
Thanks for your efforts and suggestions, Baltwo
