when connecting external device to USB, do i need to activate "remove hardware safely" or something similar? if so where do i find it?

If it contains accessible storage, eject it from the Finder or the Disk Utility. If it doesn't, just unplug the device. (87023)

    All drives should be visible in the finder. to disconnect a flash drive, open the finder and click the eject button that appears just to the right of the flash drive icon or just drag the drive(from your desktop) to the trash.. an Eject logo will appear on the trash
