Q: Epson Printer Filter Failure with rastertoescpII

I recently updated my Epson drivers via Software Update. Now when I try to print, I get an error message of a "filter failure" and that "rastertoescpII quit unexpectedly".

In the log file it says:

(/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpII) crashed on signal 11

I have tried resetting the printing system via the Print & Scan preferences and downloading & installing the Epson Printer Software 2.15 (downloaded from the Apple support site). But nothing seems to help.

When I go to the Epson driver download page, it says that I can only get drivers via Software Update.

Does anybody have suggestions?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Yuengdog1983, I don't know how you came up with this, but you're my hero today!  So incredibly frustrating to have Epson printers go down (while the Canon works fine), and it ends up being such a stupid thing that never should have been an issue.  I was resetting and reinstalling all kinds of printer crap and on the verge of calling Epson (which would have been a huge waste).  Thanks again!

My daughter had this problem. Called tech support, deleted and reinstalled printer and reloaded OS several times. TS told to go to genius bar they did the same thing as TS. Didn't fix problem told her the appointments are limited to 15 minutes eventhough they spent longer and they were done with no resolution. This post fixed the problem. Shame on you Apple!!!

Thank you, Yuengdog1983!  This has been tormenting my wife's desktop for at least a week and I haven't had time to look for the answers until today.  Her workaround was to email pdf docs to herself and then go print from my laptop, which oddly enough could still print to the same wireless printer just fine.  Your solution saved our marriage!!

Same here, naming the computer fixed the issue.  Would have been a huge problem if this thread weren't here!  Thanks all.  So, I can't remember if the Software Update I installed today updated the  Cannon, HP or Epson printer driver.  I looked in the .plist and it only lists packages, not the date of install.  Did some of you guys start having this issue after a printer driver update?  My printer worked fine for YEARS until today!  Makes me not want to update things since I feel I'll have to test everything every time.

Thank you SO much Yuengdog1983!  I was beside myself and your solution worked brilliantly!

So how do we know which updates are safe to do and which will cause us problems?

I am pleased to know I am not the only one who has been struggling, for days, with this problem. How on earth yeungdog1983 came up with this very simple but utterly obscure solution beats me - but thanks gods he did!!!
