The hard drive stopped working. That's the reason why you get the question mark (your iMac doesn't find any bootable volume) and why your iMac froze (the hard drive didn't work).
The best thing you can do is to take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller. If you haven't got a backup, your files are lost

As your Mac is frozen, hold the Power button to turn it off. Then, insert the OS X DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting to start up from the DVD. Choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify the drive. If it gives you an error, repair it. What does Disk Utility say after repairing the drive?
