iPod touch won't restore unknown error 21

I have a 16gb iPod touch (first generation I believe) and I'm running Windows 7 on my computer. I noticed a problem today when I plugged it in to charge that nothing showed up on the screen. Nothing came up when I pressed the wake or home buttons either. So after doing some searching, I pressed the home and wake buttons down simultaneously for a little over 10 seconds until a symbol came up (much darker than usual) telling me to connect to itunes.

I connected and itunes told me I had to restore my ipod. I pressed restore and after extracting the software and then saying it's preparing my iPod an error message came up saying

"iPod could not be restored. Unknown error (21)"

I've installed the latest version of iTunes, disabled my firewall and antivirus, restarted my computer and still nothing, still getting the same error message. After doing a bunch of research, it seems it may be a problem with the battery? Though I don't understand how a software restore and battery problem could be related. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and fixed it before? If so, how so? Also, does anyone know how to do battery replacement or if this would even fix the problem? Any responses are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40

These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

Hey guys thanks for the responses. I haven't modified the touch at all besides adding songs/podcasts/official apps from the apple store. I already checked my host file and that's not the problem. I've already disabled all my security software and tried and it's still showing the error. Appleisthebestforever the video you linked is for mac, but they do include a windows link for the tinyumbrella program thing. Just want to verify with you guys before I try it that that program is safe to use for both my computer and the ipod? I've never heard of it before and don't want to mess anything up if I'm not exactly sure how to use it. Thanks again!

Hey, sorry about the late response. Just started school again and have been really busy. Anyway, I've been able to try to restore on a different computer as well as use tiny umbrella to restore in various ways and it's all been unsuccessful. Thank you for all your suggestions, nonetheless. Do you guys have any more suggestions? Willing to try a lot at this point.
