Do I need notifyd?

The battery life on my MBP is not great. It will drop about 75% over a two hour span with only a web browser and Mail open. If I look in the Activity Monitor I can see the process "notifyd" running and taking 10% of my CPU. I've Googled that process to see what it does and found that it helps process notifications.
I have a few questions:
1. What exactly does it do? Do I need it?
2. How do I kill it if I don't need it?
The reason I think I might not need it is that my colleague has the same setup and his battery is much stronger than mine and his notifyd does not run and suck up his battery and CPU.

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5277

Health Information:

Cycle Count: 375

Given your model, your battery shouldn't be this low after 375 cycles. The battery was either damaged (exposure to excessive heat, for example) or is bad. Your FCC should be ~6000+ at this point, in my opinion.

"The built-in battery of your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles before it reaches 80 percent of its original capacity."

Notebook Owners

Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your replacement coverage for a defective battery to three years from the date of your notebook purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan. However, the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect. Apple offers a battery replacement service for all MacBook,MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries. You can purchase replacement batteries for many late models of Apple notebooks directly from the Apple Store.
