FaceTime fails to start on my MBA. What's the problem?

After installing FaceTime on my 11.6 MBA, every time I try to start the app, I get the following:

There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again.

Of course I close the app and start it again. And I get the same error every time. This started the very first time I launched the app.

I have 10.6.8 on my MacBook Air with all updates installed.

What's the problem?

Hey rob65r,

Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

The following article addresses your symptoms:

OS X: "An internal FaceTime error occurred" alert after clicking Facetime icon in the Dock

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4457

Symptoms

When opening FaceTime from the Dock, the following alert message may appear:

"An internal FaceTime error occurred.

There was a problem with FaceTime. You need to quit and open FaceTime again."

Resolution

Click the FaceTime icon in the Dock one time, then wait for the application to finish opening.

Additional Information

This can happen if you attempt to open FaceTime a second time while it is already loading, such as by clicking the FaceTime Dock icon more than once.

If you continue to have issues, it may be a good idea to remove FaceTime and reinstall it from the Mac App Store
