Q: migration assistant does not run on windows 8 pro

Migration Assistant did install without any error on my Vaio laptop running Windows 8 pro (Dutch version).

Howerver when started it says there's an (unspecified) error. What am I doing wrong? (Apple NOOB)

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Then stop using Migration assistant. There is nothing on your Win 8 notebook that can be used on a Mac other than your personal files. Docs and the like, music and image files. So just copy those to an external drive formatted so both Windows and OS X can read and write to the drive, FAT32 or exFAT. The copy them over to the Mac from the external.

Apple probably hasn't updated MA to work on Win 8 as if you have a new notebook that came with Win 8 why are you now moving to Mac.

Well, thanks for your reply LowLuster. Although it wasn't helpful, it sure was interesting to hear that you know what content and data  resided on my 'new' Sony Vaio. BTW: In my opinion a 4 year old laptop hardly is to be considered 'new'.

You didn't state how old you Win PC was, only that it was running Win 8. From talks with people I know that use Windows they would never upgrade a 4 year old PC to Win 8. Especially if it was already running Win 7.

So I, wrongly, Assumed you had a newer notebook that came with Win 8.

Right Content and Data (Like your PERSONAL files which is what I stated above) is the only thing that can be used on Mac from a Windows PC. No programs or settings can be carried over from a Windows PC to a Mac running OS X.

Good luck and all the best to you.

Then i think you need to refresh your informations about what can be trasfered and what not: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Eerste neus if it's possible connect pc and iMac with ethernet cable. Disconnect pc from internet, turn off any antivirus, build in and additional 3rd party firewall or any other 3rd party interent security apps or anything similar and try it again.
