If your goal is to use the second AirPort Express just for streaming, you can easily reconfigure it to "join the wireless network" provided by the first one. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.

For best streaming performance you will want the newer base station providing the wireless network and the older one to join it for streaming.

So,  can a airplay situation like airplay be configured with a router like netgear first or does the airplay senerio begin with an airport express as a primary router connected to the internet.......  then additional AEX routers in different locations.

Does AEX even need to be hooked up as an internet access router ?  Can they be used as airplay devices only ?

    Actually, either way.

    Basically AirPlay need three things:

    • An AirPlay server. Typically this is an iTunes host.
    • An AirPlay "speaker": This would be an AirPort Express, Apple TV, or an AirPlay-Ready receiver or self-powered speakers.
    • Either a wired or wireless network.

No it Express does NOT need to be connected to an Internet router. It can broadcast a wireless nertwork that would support AirPlay by itself.

So, a solid green light indicates internet access ?  Without an internet connection the unit shines solid orange ?

Not quite. A solid green LED indicates that any of the following are true:

    • There are no configuration issues with the base station.
    • There are configuration issues, but they have been set to be ignored via the AirPort Utility.
    • The base station has network connectivity; not necessarily Internet connectivity.

A solid amber (yellow) LED would indicate that the base station is finishing up a startup sequence.

Try temporarily placing the second Express base station in the same room as the primary one, and then, try again.

Are both of the base stations the 1st or 2nd generation 802.11n models? Which version of the AirPort Uility are you using? Finally, are these the only wireless routers in your current network configuration?

Fixed it.... I borrowed another AEX from a friend to experiment with.  What i failed to do when opening Airport Utility was to choose the router in question out the list of available routers on my laptop.  Once i clicked on the router in question... Bingo it appeared !

I used some apple headphones to check to see if they were working and they are all working fine
