imac dvd player not working

Hi there, my iMac DVD player no longer accepts any DVD's or CD's since I upgraded the software. I can insert the disc and I can hear the DVD player spinning the disc but then it spits them out! The DVDs come out very warm and the fan is going faster than normal. Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
