my itunes does not recognise my iphone,and ived tries everything to sort it,with no success,can anyone help please

hi,my husband got an iphone last week and he connected it to my laptop,and itunes.he now has all my contactsetc.the problem is that when i go onto my itunes to try and sort it,in the top right hand corner,next to itunes store,there is nothing there,where my iphone usually is.when i go into file,top left of page and go into devices,theres nothing there.if i go into edit,then preferences,the 2 mobiles are there.ive tried everything,reinstalling itunes etc,and nothing seems to be helping.can anyone help me please as ive ran out of ideas
