when I sort in numbers it gives me 1, 10 , 100,101 etc.... what gives?
when sorting a column numbered 1 to 178 I asked to sort but was soterted 1,10, 100, 101, etc.

you are sort text not numbers. Make sure the cells are not formatted as Text. Also make sure there are no spaces or tabs in the cells containing the numbers. Posting a screen shot would be helpful

Make sure you have not entered any commas in these cell as well. If entered, these can also change Numbers's interpretation of these from 'a number' to 'text.' Use formatting to display the comma (or semi colon, deending on your location) thousands separator (and any currency sign)

Piling on here...
One idiosyncracy of Numbers is that you can change the cell format but it won't "take" if the data in the cell doesn't fit the format.
Also, text aligns the the left of a cell by default. Numbers align to the right by default. That is one way to tell if you have text "numbers" or actual numbers.
