ATV HBO GO - "Session Timed Out, Re-authenticating..."

I've been using HBO GO on my Apple TV since it was released with the software update without any problems, but tonight every time I try to watch something I'm getting this error "Session Timed Out, Re-authenticating..." And then a second later it takes me back to the main HBO GO page, but always appears again when trying to stream something. Even when I try to deactivate my device in order to reactivate it, it gives this error preventing me from deactivating.

Any one have any ideas?

It should be noted that I'm able to stream just fine on my iPad version of HBO Go.

Hello FalkonJenova,

I would be concerned too if I was not able to connect to HBO Go using my Apple TV.

First, I recommend restarting your Apple TV:

Restarting your Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) using the onscreen menu

If you have Apple TV software 5.0 or later installed, you can restart your Apple TV using the onscreen menu. To restart your Apple TV choose Settings > General > Restart.

You can find the full article here:

If you are still not able to to connect to HBO Go, I recommend using the information in this article to seek additional support:

I get this error message in hbo go when I try to watch the next episode in an hbo series (after coming back after a day since watching the last episode). It takes me back to the main menu and I can watch anything else within hbogo except that next episode. If I restart appletv, it works, BUT this is not an appropriate solution. This is a bug with appletv.

The way I solve this is to stream the episode from my ipad to appletv, which is completely ridiculous.

Yes, this is really annoying. It's not just the loss of a connection and having to sign back in. It's specifically targeting the next episode in a series. You either reboot the entire unit or begin watching a previous episode for a minute, then you can watch the one you want. It's really ridiculous. Does anyone have a fix for this? Is it an HBO Go issue and are they aware? It's like you're not even signed out because you can watch anything else you want, ANYTHING, except the next episode of a series. Thanks.

The same thing is happening for me. I find if I go to my computer and sign in to HBOGo on their website with login and password for my ISP then HBOGo works on the Apple TV. This is only recent as in the past the Apple TV had been authorized for HBOGo. For Showtime Anytime the same thing has always happened, where if I haven't watched for a few days it requires signing in again from my computer. Very annoying.

I used to watch HBO GO on Roku, and it did the same thing. If you Google the problem, hundreds of people using all manner of devices report the same problem. I think it's a fault in HBO GO. For me, it happens if a couple of days (the week-end) have passed since I last watched a series. Come Monday, HBO GO won't let me watch the next episode. In my experience, it will start working again after 5 or 10 minutes, which is the time it takes me to try exiting HBO GO, re-entering, retrying the episode, yada yada. I suspect that it might re-authenticate all by itself if I was patient enough to wait 10 minutes. I will contact HBO next.

(10 minutes later)

HBO GO won't accept my problem request because the form generates two errors:

Select Your TV Provider: cannot be blank

Request Category: cannot be blank

But, on the form, there is no field to enter these items. In other words, you can't submit the service request because you can't enter the information they require.
