Why won't sound volume icon go away from desktop?

There is a ghosted volume icon constantly on my screen - the one that appears when you click on the "f" keys to adust volume up or down. It doesn't go away. When I click on an "f" key to adjust volume, and second indicator icon appears over top of the ghosted one but it disappears when volume has been adjusted up or down- the ghosted one stays there. It drives me crazy when watching a full screen video. How can I make it go away?

I have tried a different keyboard but that did not solve the problem.

Thanks, BDA - I did as you suggested and there was no change - BUT I did find the cause of the problem and solved it. I had an Apogee One music interface plugged in via USB and decided to disconnect it and see what happens. As soon as I pulled the USB cable, the icon went away. Whooo Hoooo - problem solved. I'm not sure what's going to happen when I need to use the Apogee unit again, but for now my desktop is back to normal.

Your suggestion was helpful though. I learned how to do a safe boot from your tip.

Hello,

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.

You've probably got a couple of corrupt preference files.

Move these files to the Desktop for now...

/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences>com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost>com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist

where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.

This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).

Reboot
