I can't empty Aperture 3.2.4 Trash - please help.

Hi there

I know there have been various discussions about this but I have looked through and didn't really find an answer for me. I currently have 2358 photos showing in Aperture Trash but when I click on Empty Aperture Trash (or do the keyboard short cut) nothing happens. Nothing goes from Aperture and nothing arrives in the Trash can on the desktop.

I now have my Aperture Library in an attached (rather than online using a NAS drive - thanks to previous advice) hard-drive.

I tried a test using past advice from Leonie and created a new Aperture Library on my hard drive, loaded up some fresh photos, deleted some of them so they moved to Aperture Trash, then tried to 'Empty Aperture Trash' .... same result. They just won't budge.

Please can anyone help?

Create a library on your internal root drive and try it. Post back the results.

Please excuse my ignorance but do you mean my hard drive?

I wrote 'internal root drive' not 'hard drive' so my suggestion was to make a test library on the drive that is inside your Mac not the one you are using for your library, the attached drive.

Oh really sorry Frank. My fault. Wasn't being clear. Yes I did try creating a test library on my internal drive and no success in deleting the new images that I had put there and moved to trash.

So this library was originally on a NAS and you copied it over to an attached drive, is that correct? How is the new attached drive formatted? Aperture libraries should only be on drives formated Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Have you tried running the library fist aid procedures? Hold the option and command keys while starting Aperture and select first repair permissions, then close Aperture start again with those keys down and run repair library and then try it.

BTW just to be clear what version of Aperture and OS are you running?

Hi Frank

Sorry to go quiet on you. I wanted to do another back up before doing the repairs that you suggested. I have now done Repair Permissions, and Repair Database for Aperture. Still the same case with the trash in that it does not empty. Maybe it's not so serious, but I am concerned that 2364 photos waiting to be deleted takes up a lot of place on my harddrive?

Aperture version is 3.2.4, Mac OS 10.8.8.

Maybe these just aren't compatible with each other?

Are you sure that is correct? The latest non-beta release of MacOS X is Mac OS 10.8.4. Or are you using a developer version?

Hi there. I am sorry to pester but I wonder if you experts have any more ideas I could try regarding my problem please? I am just wondering whether the Aperture and Mac versions aren't compatible with each other? I have done the First Aid stuff as Frank suggested .... No change.

Your Aperture version 3.2.4 and MacOS X 10.6.8 are compatible, no problem.

But what about Frank's other question?

Hi Leonie and Frank, I have just checked on Disk Utility and indeed the hard drive is formatted correctly for Mac (OS Extended Journaled). Hmm..... I am still clueless!

I have now done Repair Permissions, and Repair Database for Aperture.

Try also "Rebuild database", if you have not already done so.

How are your permissions set for the external drive?

I'd try, if setting the "Ignore Ownership" flag will help. You can do that from the "Get Info" panel.

How do I get to the permissions window that you have shown

The permissions panel that I have shown is part of the "Get Info " panel.

Select your external drive in the Finder.
Then press the key combination ⌘I (or use File > Get Info from the Finder's main menu bar).
Click the disclosure triangle beside the "Sharing and Permissions" caption to reveal the brick.
You need to click the padlock icon as well, to be able to change the permissions. ENter your administrator password when prompted.

I hope Frank Caggiano is still following this thread. He knows more about recalcitrant trash bins than I do.
