Cannot fax from Adobe (Acrobat) Reader

All my attempts to fax directly from Adobe (Acrobat) Reader, using my three Macs, fail. The Reader unexpectedly quits, and consequently, no fax is sent. There are of course ways around the corner (e.g. fax pdf from another application), but a fix is definitely in order. Is it a OSX 10.4.6 bug, or is it the poor Adobe Reader 7.0.8 update to blame?

The best workaround I could think of is to open the document in Preview and fax out of there. It worked for me. Hope this helps.

Hi Susie,

I don't really know how things have started working again. Just noticed things are OK after updating OSX to 10.4.7. I have also (I am not too sure exactly when this step was taken, and if it was necessary at all) re-updated Adobe Reader. This was done by steps, as guided by the installer, first to 7.07 then to 7.08. Wish you luck!

I was quite frustrated recieving not even one reply for so long... At least somebody cares! And since I cannot give points to myself (the post is still officially unanswered), so here is a deal: If you fix the bug following my half advice, please let us know, and the points will be all yours!

I almost rarely fax anything, but I have tried to use CocoaBooklet from Adobe Reader, and it does not work. I get a message that Adobe Reader does not allow you to make a pdf of a pdf, you can only Save. That is an Adobe thing. Apple's built-in fax capability is a pdf service.

So you have to look at other choices: You could use Preview. You could use another fax software package, such as PageSender. You could also probably make a desktop printer for faxing, and drop the pdf onto it. You would need to fax from some other application to have the modem show up as a printer, and then you should be able to make a desktop printer for it.

I just tried faxing to myself from Adobe Reader, using Apple's faxing, and it seemed to work, except that I did not actually have the modem connected to anything. So maybe there is a problem with your installation.

I think the "fix" is to update to Adobe Reader 7.0.8. After seeing that was the version you were using, I updated and can now fax successfully. Thanks for the tip.
