Q: iPhone 4S low battery and hot

For around  2weeks now my iPhone 4S has been running out of charge really quickly today was under 6 hours even when fully charged and I wasn't using it! Also it's getting hot when I use it and sometimes if its just sat there. Any ideas what I can do?

    Hello Speedy76,

Thank you for providing the details about the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  I found a couple of resources that may help address this issue.

First, I recommend following these steps if your iPhone has a short battery life:

    Battery life seems short

    1. Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
    2. Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    3. Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
    4. If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
    5. When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this HT1650_2.jpg.
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

You can also find useful information about the iPhone's operating temperatures in this article:When troubleshooting temperature, please refer to the following article:

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (4th generation): Keeping device within acceptable operating temperatures

When using the device or charging the battery, it is normal for it to get warm. The exterior of the device functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the device to the cooler air outside. If the interior temperature of the device exceeds the normal operating range, the device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. If this occurs, you may notice the following:
    • The device stops charging.
    • The display dims or goes black.

If the temperature continues to be a concern, you can isolate the issue by restoring your iPhone as new:

    Best,

What kind of cellular signal are you getting? The weaker the signal the more power the radio puts out which in turn drains the battery faster and gets hotter because of the transmitter trying to maintain a connection in a low signal environment.

    Hi

Thanks I have already done what you ve suggested and thought it was ok but it's just the same! Very annoying. Today was sat doing nothing and battery life went from 75% to 25% in an hour with phone still hot even though I'm not using it. Have an appointment at the store to see if they can help work out what's wrong.

    Hi

When I noticed it was low and hot today it was full strength a so no idea what the problem is. Worried the battery needs replacing which is £60! The phone has already been changed by apple when the first one lost all wifi connection within 3 months of buying. Think this one maybe a reconditioned one so I'm wondering if I can try getting a new one when I go to the store. I ve tried everything even not using it but hats the use of an iPhone if you never use it!!

I reset it and then restored it i think. Is restoring it when you back up then clear it and then restore from iTunes?

Yes but if it continues then instead of using your backup, which could have the fault in it that is causing it to run hot, restore it as a new phone then manually redownload all your apps.
