Boot the ipod in disk mode and then try connecting. see here for disk mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

Latest itunes? Or just take it to an Apple Store, or Hey i just thought this: maybe a broken or not working cable??

I think I'm going to take it to the apple store because i checked the cable its fine...and well i have the latest itunes
