Popping sound when I touch the screen?

I've had my iPhone 5 since January/February and recently I've noticed that when I touch the screen in certain areas, I can hear a "popping" sound coming from the screen. It doesn't affect my phone, as it still works fine, but I'd just like to know what could be causing these "popping" sounds, and if there is anyway I could stop them?

You mean a sound different than the normal 'click'? And only in certain areas of the screen? What areas? And are the areas the same regardless of what function you're using onthe phone, regardless of what app you're using?

This seems like it coud be a hardware issue with the display. Try the following steps.

Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Reset the device. (Same article as above.)

Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)

Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.

Test the issue after each step. If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

It's like a popping or clicking sound, and it's usually the left side of my screen, and they are roughly the same place. It happens whenever I touch the screen (whether I use an app or if its locked/turned off) but its only if I apply a slight pressure, as in I don't hear it when I type, but I do when I press on an app in that area. So I don't think it could be due to a hardware problem

The glass on your screen is held in place by a plastic bezel. This bezel holds the metal tabs that secure the entire assembly to the phone. This plastic bezel's glue has failed causing the screen to "pop" when it is pushed back into that bezel.

Some people receive their phones with a bad bezel, while others have bad batteries that expand pushing the screen away from this plastic bezel. This will typically occur on the left side of the screen. (So, if your battery isn't holding a charge and randomly fluctuating this might be a contributing factor)

If your phone is under warranty, apple will swap it out for free. If not, you will need to pull your screen off, and re-glue that bezel to the glass. I pulled mine away from the screen and used a tooth pick to "paint" super glue to the edge of the exposed screen. Works like a dream.

Keep in mind if your battery is bad, you will need to replace it before gluing your glass.

Important note: self repairs void your warranty, but if you're out of warranty it doesn't really matter.

If it's on the lock screen, and you are still hearing the popping sound, then I can't think of any software issue that coud occur at that screen.

Either way, there's a problemwith the phone. Take the steps I listed, and come back to tell us if the popping sound went away. If you restore the device as new, and the sound persist, then it's hardware.

The first two steps are completely safe. No possible data loss. The 'restore from backup' option is also very safe, as long as you follow the steps I linked. The last step, unless you skip the backup part, is also safe.

Follow the steps listed, in the order listed, and you'll be pefectly safe.

Im having the same exact issue with the upper left corner of my touchscreen. it happens when the phone is both locked and unlocked and "pops" with even the lightest pressure. it's similar to the way old Blackberry touchscreens "clicked" when applying pressure.

it doesn't effect the functionality of the phone at all but is rather annoying anytime i use that section of the screen. My lock button also rattles at bit which is why im sure this is just a hardware issue related to the quality control issue Apple has experience since Jobs past.

Wrong. Unauthorized service on an iPhone removes the option of an out-of-warranty replacement.

For example, even a water-damaged iPhone 5S 64GB which retails for $849 can be replaced by Apple for $269, unless there has been something done to the iPhone which voids the warranty, such as unauthorized service.

Whether you personally choose to use authorized or unauthorized service is irrelevant. You stated that self repairs void your warranty, but that really doesn't matter. And that's incorrect.

When/if your $30 repair fails, you will have no support from the facility that 'repaired' it. They won't guarantee their work. Also, Apple does not sell repair parts, so any repair parts that are used by a non-authorzed repair facility are not legitimate Apple parts. They're either stolen or counterfeit parts.

Penny-wise, pound-foolish.
