I bought an Apple TV but my tv does not have a HDMI input. Can I get a scart to HDMI adaptor and will my Apple TV work?

HDMI is the only supported method, there is no guarantee. Also, if using a TV that isn't HDCP compliant you will not be able to view protected content (ie Netflix, iTunes)
Thank you...The TV is HD ready with no HDMI input. Does that make a difference? I saw this online but not sure it will work. I just want it for iTunes & Netflix?

The device is designed for HDMI and there will no guarantee with any converter. Also, even if it does work your tv would still need to support HDCP in order to view iTunes and Netflix content

I have checked with Philips and the TV supports HDCP and has DVI input. Can I use a DVI to HDMI connector with Apple TV?

It may work but DVI is not officially supported. The other issue will be that DVI does not handle audio so even if you get a picture you won't have sound over DVI and would need a solution for that.

The item you list on Amazon may work, even some of the reviews there suggest they have used an AppleTV with it but if it didn't what would the 3rd party seller's policy be on a return.
The problem is that HDMI has copy protection (HDCP) to prevent people copying higher quality digital video and audio, and in many instances that would include preventing conversion from digital to analogue via an adapter - those that spring up are often therefore of dubious legality.

...I've used one to connect AppleTV to a VGA projector. If your TV has VGA in and also a separate audio in (would need another cable) it might do the job.
Ultimately all adapters are a bit of a compromise and you might be better returning the AppleTV or putting money for an adapter towards a new TV set.

Thanks Alley Cat! I am new to all this connection stuff but am thinking now that I might be able to connect my laptop to TV & play my itunes movies & Netflix through there? Also with a DVI input is input not digitally enabled?

There are a couple of flavours of DVI but I suspect the one on the TV will be digital not DVI-A. See:

What kind of laptop do you have, and what kind of output connector?
Be aware that iTunes HD content requires an HDCP compliant connection to playback on a computer connected display.
You mention an amp - does that have optical in? If so I would be tempted to try HDMI to DVI to the TV and AppleTV's optical out to the amp - I can't guarantee the HDMI to DVI will work - it should but as DVI is not officially supported the only way to find out on a given set is to try.

It is a DVI-I so has both analogue and digital!! Ill probably just buy a new tv with HDMI connector as not as expensive as I initially assumed. My laptop has HDMI connector so guess I need to upgrade in order to use that. I dont have an amp that was a mispelling!!
