Q: iTunes deleted Thousands of albums

Upon upgrading, I found that iTunes has deleted all of my songs.

They are not anywhere on my Hard Drive.

They were ripped from CD's that I own, literally thousands of CD's that my wife and I have collected.

I tried restoring a previous Library, with no sign of the songs.

Whats the deal, apple?

Thanks for the response.  It is appreciated.

    Sadly that did not work.

When I tried that, only cloud enabled files appeared, and streaming alone worked.  Nothing else.

Many of the missing albums were in a folder called Removed Files.

Most of them are just plain gone.

I had some of them restored from a manual backup.   None restored from Time Machine.

This is just a huge FU to me from Apple, and I cannot express how livid I am at the moment.

Never heard of this. Where is this folder located?

    None restored from Time Machine.

Did you Restore the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder?

If they are not in the latest Time Machine backup, go back a few hours/days (to before you updated iTunes).

The folder called Removed Files is iTunes Trash.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3842

Could it be that iTunes doesn't restore things that have been moved to trash?

I know that thebackup applications do backup anything from trash.

Do you have any idea why they were in Removed Files?

According to what I am able to find you have to put them there.

Again, thanks for the prompt replies.

The Removed Files folder is my iTunes folder which is in my Music Folder.

I certainly did NOT put them there.

I assume that upon upgrade, iTunes put them there.  I must have lost some upon a previous Empty Trash.  Why it would not have trashed them all, or put them there to begin with, is still a mystery.

I believe that I may now have screwed up, as I am attempting to start from scratch.  I am starting with a new iTunes Library, and importing the remaining albums from my manual backup and from the iTunes media folder.  This probably eliminates any possiblility of a successful restore.  I will probably start bringing CD's out of storage over the weekend, and begin ripping CD's from scratch.

Again, thanks to you kind folks those replies.

And, though its probably not necessary to say, no thanks to Apple.  In fact, many cuss and swear words in your general direction.

Thanks, I have not purchased Match.  Good idea, though.  Thanks, northshore.

Chris, I only managed to restore a small percentage through Time Machine.  It was an old unit, with limited storage.  As a result, media was exempted in recent backups.  This, of course, falls on me for not backing up properly.  I have a number of additional files that were manually backed up that are currently restoring, as well.  All told, about 90% are unrecoverable.

I do not excuse Apple, however, for attempting to force everyone to purchase through the store or use the cloud.  Deleting peoples files without permission is a major glitch in their system.

Again, thanks for the replies.  The Apple Community, unlike Apple Customer Service, rocks!!

Yes, it's a bug, not by design.

Maybe time for a new external drive??

To me it sounds like you really need to do more to develop a really good backup system and stop blaming others. No matter how good they attempt to make the update process there will always be unexpected things happen that can cause problems so a good backup is always needed.

Boy, Allan, why did you even bother to post?!

I had already mentioned my culpability in the backup process.

Trying to up your post count?

Why not try to help people, or shut up?

Again, and yet again, thanks to Chris and the productive responders.
