Hi All,
I changed my uid to 1000 (so it's the same as on my other unix systems). Now my username doesn't appear in the login window. I can still login by selecting "other" user, and typing it manually. I just can't work out how to have it appear on the login screen. My girlfriends account name does appear so it's not a global setting.

Did you read the warning above User ID? It states if you change it, you might not be able to log in. I suggest you reset it to what it was.
Yes I did read the warning. I can login fine, it's just that the username doesn't appear on the login screen as it does with other users on the system.
Changing the uid back from 1000 to 501, will mean me having to harmonise this userid on the tens of unix systems I also manage. This is a lot more work than fixing one machine.
Can you help? I appreciate it's more of a cosmetic issue than a major one, but it would be nice to have it back and working with uid 1000.

I understand you want to set the UID to 1,000.
Try changing it back to whatever it was, log out and see if your user name appears on the login screen. If it does, then that would seem to indicate that the 1,000 change is the problem. That would be the starting point for trying to see if something can be done to fix the login screen with the UID set to 1,000.
Appears to be an older undocumented bug. It seems that anything under or above UID 1000 works fine, but having it set to 1000 seems to make it appear as a hidden account.
Here's the plist location, if you feel like experimenting. If you find a solution, post it here!

Thanks, that was the problem, I tried various UIDs, all of which worked, except 1,000 which remains hidden. It is indeed an undocumented foible of OS X.
I've had a good Google and found only people with the same issue, but no resolution.
Other than the textbook "change it back", I don't support anyone at Apple (an engineer would be good) has a workaround, or somewhere else to start looking?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.
