How to convert a .mov to a .avi using FCP X
I am trying to make a .avi movie from a final cut x project. Does anyone know if that can be done in FCP X? If not, how?
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

change the wrappers …
and, no, just changing the suffix doesn't do the trick .....
You didn't say whether you have Compressor, which can make either MP4s or AVI's. So can MPEG Streamclip. FCP will export MP4 but not AVI.
But this may be academic for playing out through your TV. Check your manual and I think you'll find it wants either MP4/.H.264 or MPEG2 Program stream or Transport stream.

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the quick response. I do have Compressor. Actually, here is my deal. I made a 10 minute movie in FCP X and put it on DVD for the end user. However, I am wondering what other methods I can use to send it to the end user who will be showing it at a wedding to a large group. DVD always compresses and never looks as good as he original FCP X movie. Fact of Life.
She has a PC and a DVD player and a large screen TV option. I am trying to provide the abosolute best quality and my thnking was if I can take the master file in 6 or 8 G size and place it on a flash drive or SD card, perhaps she could insert it into her TV to play it directly.
Am I nuts?
Thanks
Sandy
You're on the right track. All things equal, playing from the flash drive should provide better quality than the DVD.
Or, if she has a laptop, she could, with the right connections, play out to the TV.
I agree with Jakob that MP4 (H.264) is probablty the best choice/
But because there are no universal TV standards for this (example, my Sony wants a .mov) and because we're talking cross-platform, it's hard to say conclusively that a given format or method will be guaranteed to work. (I did a search and unfortunately found a lot of Viera owners who were having trouble regardless of the format.) Too bad she's not a Mac person; Apple TV would be a great solution to cut through the uncertainties.
For a 10 minute video you could easily make two versions (Mp4 amd MPEG2 Program Stream) and hopefully you'll have enough lead time to test and make any course corrections that are necessary.
Good luck.

Thanks Russ, I found that .mov will play from a flash drive but the sound starts half way thorugh...sigh...
Although, I must say the video quality is outstanding. Now if I could just get it all to play in sync, I'd be thrilled.
How do I give you stars for helpful, the little box did not come up?
Sandy
Yes.
I have just made 7 short test files that I am playing -in different formats-and M4v works so far with poor vid quality (29m size) so i am trying others in larger sized formats. Interestingly, the 'computer' format plays on my TV. I will let you know which is the best.
Sandy
Sounds like progress.
The mp4 bit rate in Compressor settings defaults to a pretty low 1 Mbps. If you are displaying a 720 size, I'd bump that to somewhere around 5-6 Mbps. For 1080, I'd go higher, to perhaps 8-10 Mbps. Also double check your size in Geometry to ensure it's what you need.
Hopefully that will improve the image quality.
Russ
Is the sound in sync played in QT Player on your Mac?
Russ
If you have Compressor, you can do this with Quick Time Components. If yu don't have Compressor, MPEG Streamclip can also do this.

Question: Why convert to AVI?
All computers these days can play mp4/h.264, and that can also be used on mobile devices..
Hi Jacob,
I want to place the movie on a flash drive and play it on my Panasonic Viera TV. The TV does not recognize the .mov fomat. Thought I would try .avi.
Thanks
Try renaming the .mov file to .mp4 and see if your TV will play it.
If the export as Master File.. in FCPX is H.264/AAC, then it should be the same..
Thanks Karsten
I will try that.
