Look for the files on your computer by going to the iTunes folder in your Music folder. Once it is located then drag it onto iTunes to see it show up.
Where are my iTunes files located?

The problem was that iTunes would not download the content to my PC. Although it knew that I had purchased it and wouldn't let me purchase it again there was no easy way to actually force it to download from iTunes.
Eventually I found the answer by clicking almost every conceivable option in iTunes:
Log into the store
In quicklinks select 'Purchased'
Click 'Not on this computer'
Select what you want to download and click download
What a faff!
hope this answer is useful to anyone else who find that iTunes hasn't downloaded their full purchased content.
