Q: I am trying to play an MP4 video, it says "You may need to install an additional software to play this movie" .... What is it?

I would recommend using VLC player for random mp4 movie files.
If it is an MP4 from a known device like ipad or iphone perhaps ensuring itunes and OSX is totally up to date
