Yikes, really? Wonder if it dissolved some dust particles or created just enough continuity for the signal. Weird. My post was on Feb 10. It's Apr 9 and mine's starting to act up again, so 2 months exactly. I keep my phone in my pocket, so probably pocket lint/dust is building quickly. Still, NEVER had the problem with the old connector, so I do thing there is a design flaw Apple could stand to update. I'll leave Apple feedback, others should do the same (link below.) The bad news is that a redesign would mean another connector type and the joy of buying new accessories and cables!

Sensational - thanks so much for the solution.  worked a treat for me also - mine was so bad it was no longer making any connection after a few weeks of jiggling it. I was starting to panic that I couldn't charge my phone at all......the anxiety was huge!

Works like a charm . Got the lint out with a pin and it works like new .

TnD1wyou are a hero! I just used a bent staple to dig out a bunch of lint that I couldn't see.

No more wiggling around with the plug. You just saved me 5-10 minutes per day. I hereby bow down and pay homage!

Often times a simple cleaning will do the trick, however in my situation the port was too far gone and needed to be replaced.

Fortunately there is inexpensive shops like www rockhoptec com that replaced the entire power port assembly for about $50 total

I hear ya. I just cleaned mine again and it's already acting up. I hope everyone having this problem is using  apple.com/feedback to let Apple know this new port is a poor design.

Peeps.. Help me out abit please! I've cleaned out my lightning port and wow, a **** of a lot of pocket lint came out! But I am still having to apply upwards pressure to the charger upwards towards the ceiling when my phone is laid down it in my hand.

If anybody knows why this is then could you let me know please!

    Many thanks for any help!

    Regards,

    Bretty.

Try spraying some contact cleaner into the port.  You can find it at the hardware store.  Just a tiny amount will be enough.

I shall get some bought after my tea, open til 8 here! - although I don't think it will work.. So much movement between the charger end and port hole, it's like the port hole has worn away or the charger contact end has worn away.

Having to wrap my cable around my phone long ways to get it to charge.

    Regards

Thanks!  Toothpick worked great! Charging cable now fits more securely, doesn't lose its charging connection when I wiggle the cable.

Not sure where my iPhone was hiding all that lint...

I have had an iphone 5 since the November of 2012. For awhile it wasn't charging well and I assumed it was the cable then it got bad and wouldn't charge well at all. It would display the not reliable message etc. then I read about the lint and removed a HUGE amount of lint and it charged well for a while and then the issues started again. The phone would charge if I blew into the Port and now it will charge only if a wiggle it up a certain way and it has gotten to the stage that it is barely charging at all! Is there any way to fix it or what will happen? Can Apple repair the port or is my phone ruined

Contact your network. They bounced me into apple the first time who arranged a replacement for my first one. However, I was within 12 months so it may be different over that. Don't know. Or try an Apple Genius Bar if you have one nearby.

My phone has been plugged in and not charging and so I tried to turn it off while it was plugged and it turns itself on again! And when it turns itself on it still isn't charging! Is it an issue with the charger or is it an issue with the phone? Please read my question above to get the details on my situation if you are unsure!

Thank you soooooo much, been having issues for a few weeks now. I just got a pin and pulled out a LOT of lint from my port and it works perfectly!!

Well I had all these problems, intermittent charging, need to hold the cable down to get a connection.

Anyway, I read this thread, I was out looking for toothpicks (WHERE do you buy them haha), thought I'd drop into Apple anyway cos maybe they'd have some more professional cleaning arrangement.

Must be my lucky day cos I got almost instant Genius Bar walk-in appointment, the gal took a quick look with an LED torch and told me it would be better to get a new phone. 2 minutes later, brand new phone. No charge. .. dunno whether to be happy or not! Feels like such a waste, it was a great phone and I am sure it coulda been saved! On the other hand... shiny new phone so, woo hoo! Thank-you Apple Hong Kong xxox

Interesting they didn't even try to blow it out or clean it up. I did suggest it, and she said, nah, it's better to replace with a new unit. Seriously they didn't even take it for a closer look. Maybe there was a bigger issue there than lint.

Gotta suggest, if it's still in warranty, take it in. Happy linting anyway!
