degrading picture quality with camera iphone 5

When I first got my iPhone 5 about 10 months ago, it made rather nice photos... decently sharp, at least if the lighting was optimal. I look back at some of the photos I took the first day or two and marvel. I have a picture of a bee on a tiny flower that clearly shows the bee's fur and flower's eensy weensie stamens.

Now, usually the photos are blurry and low res, even in good lighting. The camera cannot focus on a small flower close-up even in the best lighting.

I have HDR on. The file sizes usually come in well under 1 mg. Even if it uses higher megapixels (2-3 is the highest I see), the picture quality is rather sucky. The lense looks clean.

The way it handles light and shadows is pretty deplorable, but that's never been good ...any workarounds known?

The people in the Apple Store said there is no way to override the presets and force the camera to take higher resolution pictures than it thinks it should. They did not know why it takes such small size pictures. And, they had no comment about the change in the focus capability after looking at my photos.

Any ideas on why my picture quality has degraded?

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Input much appreciated (even if only commiseration).

Thanks, Teelbee

Thanks for your advice.

Would dropping the phone cause this?

I suppose I could try a different Genius Bar person. The last one was useless as far as camera help went.

I recently deleted most of my apps and reinstalled only the ones I use the most to try to improve my sagging battery life. It helped.

I'm a bit worried about Restore. Would Restore cause me to lose all my Text and Notes?

Well, the Genius suggested I restore the phone to boost my sagging battery life (suspecting a corrupt app); but warned I would lose my Messages and Notes. I thought that was a bit much, I really don't want to nuke ~my data~ after all, it goes back to 2008.

He said restoring from backup will just likely bring back whatever corruptions are causing the problem in the first place.

So, I guess I should just consider the camera to be semi-hosed?

As I suggested before you can backup and restore as a new device just to see if it resolves the problem with the battery (and maybe the camera). You can always restore again from the backup to get your data back.

If the restore as new doesnt work, it is a hardware issue.

If it does then there is third party software that can extract messages and notes from the iPhone.

Also, although a long shot, iOS 7 is due out soon and there is a chance it may right the ship for you.
