need to replace the graphics card. help.

I had bought my mac pro in 2005 and my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600) seem to be underperforming lately.

I play latest computer games and was wondering what would be a good replacement?

thanks.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), bought in Feb 2008

System Profile: make sure it says "MacPro3,1"

There was no Mac Pro in 2005 other than in Intel and Apple t est labs. First one sold in Aug 2006.

Apple ATI 5770 works in all Mac Pro models w 10.6.5+ as you can easily find and see for $250.

Barefeats.com has lots of benchtests to look at more powerful and expensive but 5770 is a step up from 2600XT by far, and anytime I see someone with one, I recommend strongly to upgrade and replace.

The Apple-EFI-firmware 5770 (about US$250) works in every model Mac Pro, and drivers are in 10.6.5. It is a good card, will improve performance and compatability with more advanced software, and is trouble-free.

You can pay more for a different card and get MUCH more complexity and obscure non-operation under certain conditions. Most other solutions require 10.8.3 and later.

I recommend you buy the Apple 5770 and live happily ever after.

As we and everyone will tell you it works in ALL Mac Pro models.

Apple doesn't like to back-test and certify and wipes it's hands. I take things with a grain of salt.

10s of thousands have upgraded and like me using Mac Pro 1,1 from 2006 works excellent, very happy.

Something about audio over hdmi or something minor.

And if you looked in the comments on the product page you would get first hand experience. Or the upteen thousand of threads since 10/2010 who have Mac Pro 2009 and older.

"You may notice display anomalies or issues playing back video or other HDCP-encoded content when you use an ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card in Mac Pro computers released before the Mac Pro (Mid 2010)."

So if you are not watching copy-protected movies, the card works in all models of Mac Pro.
