Q: Apps Store allows to sign in but does not allow update or purchase

iLife came installed on my new Macbook Pro. I am being prompted to download two udates, one each for iMovie and iPhoto but Apps Store, despite permitting successful log-in, keeps on demanding password over and over again. To resolve the issue, Apple has sent me free codes for iLife. If i uninstall iLife and try to reinstall it using new codes, will Apps Store allow that? As i am totally new to Mac, I am reluctant to delete any application.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Just put the apps in the Trash, but don't empty it. You can retieve them later if need be. The Mac App Store can't see them in the Trash, so you should be able to redeem your codes and install new versions of the apps. If you are successful then you can empty the Trash.

    Dear Dahoveed,

Something wrong has happened. I picked the icons of GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto from Launchpad and dragged these to Trash. GarageBand and iPhoto icons disappeared but iMovie did not. I reached Apps through Finder and dragged the iMovie icon to Trash. I did not empty Trash. However only iMovie icon is visible in Trash and the other two are no where. Apps store still does not allow me to redeem new codes. What to do now?

Sorry, I didn't realize that you would use LaunchPad. I was thinking drag them to the Trash from the Applications folder. Dragging them to the Trash from LaunchPad likely immediately deletes them, I don't know for sure, I have never really used LaunchPad.

How are you trying toredeem these codes? What process are your using?

I open Apps Store and Log-in. Then on the right side, in Quick launch box, I press Redeem button. Again the same cycle starts. It keeps on asking for my password entry...and so on. If I go to Purchase, it still shows 3 Apps of iLife to accept.

    Dear Dahoveed,

I am struggling with my Macbook Pro for the past 30 days now! I do not have access to Apple Store here. The support I am getting through e-mail from Apple has not been able to solve the issue. Has some other Apple ID been used on this (brand new) computer by the reseller?

As long as you are not actually seeing a starnger's Apple ID appear on your Mac, them most likely no.

The issue is that you likely didn't do the setup of the new Mac exactly right. When you first set up the Mac, before using any apps you are supposed to go to the Mac App Store, sign into your account (Store menu) and go to the Purchases pane and accept the iLife apps; iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. If you did not do that and you used any of the three apps, then this is the type of problem that results. You cannot accept the apps and ypu cannot update them.

Do you ever get an opportunity to enter a redemption code?

No. I have never gotten an opportunity to enter a redemption code.

No, I do not see any stranger ID.

Step by step what is happening when you try to redeem a code. If you can take and post screen shots of what you see (don't revel your Apple ID or password in a screen shot.)

To take a screen shot press Command + Shift + 3. By default, screen shots are saved to the Desktop. To post a screen shot here use the camera icon and browse to the Desktop and select a screen shot.

Reddem button pressed from Quick Links.

A box opens containing my Apple ID (I have deleted the ID, so it also appears blank) and a blank box for Password. If I eneter password, the same box reappears.Screen Shot 2013-08-17 at 8.44.51 AM.png

'Same box' means the Box containing Apps Store sign, a space for Apple ID on left and Password on right.

Have you tried signing out, quitting, shutting down your Mac and rebooting your modem/router, then start from scratch with trying to redeem a code?

Sorry it is 1 am and I need to go to bed.

Tried everything except rebooting my modem/router, without success.

I signed out from Apps Store, then closed the Apps Store by pressing Quit Apps Store and shut down my computer. Stitched of my DSL modem/router and switched it on after a while. Turned on my computer, opened Apps Store, signed-in and pushed Redeem button. No success :-(
