Q: Mac Mini will not connect through Airport Extreme

My Mac Mini will connect to the Internet only if it is connected directly to my cable modem. If I move the cable modem connection to the Airport Extreme and then connect the Mac Mini to an Airport Extreme port, it will not connect to the Internet. It will, however, connect through the Wi-Fi connection. I have already tried various cables and rebooting both the Mac Mini and the Airport Extreme, so I do not know what else to try.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Hi, just checking...

Is the Mini plugged into a LAN port, & the Modem plugged into the WAN port?

Is your Modem also a Wifi Router?

When connecting via Wifi, What IP does the Mac Have, & what IP does the Extreme have?

    1. Yes, the Mini is plugged into a LAN port and the modem into the WAN port. I jsut tried swapping LAN ports, but there was no change.
    2. The modem is not a also WiFi router. The Extreme is the only WiFi router.
    3. When connecting with WiFi, the Mini IP is 10.0.1.2 and the Extreme is 10.0.1.1.

    Hmmm,

Hi, this has worked for a few...

Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

    Click OK.
