magicjack plus and Time Capsule 2TB

I have been using the new MagicJack Plus with my Time Capsule 2TB with no problems for 6 months. Then it stopped working. It can't connect and all that happens is the network light comes on then the telephone light comes on I get a dial tone for a few seconds then the lights go out and the sequence starts all over. I recived a new MagicJack Plus and it did the same thing so MagicJack sent me a third one still the same thing. We tried different power adapters and different ethernet ports but nothing works. I can't seem to find the MAC address or even an IP address for the MagicJack using the Airport Utility 6.3.1 with the latest firmware. I wanted to try to open ports 5060 and 5070 but apparantly you have to assign it to an IP address which I find strange. The MagicJack Plus works fine when attached to a computer via USB. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you happen to upgrade the firmware? Just then.. as Apple just pushed out 7.6.4.. and that will probably kill it.

It will work via the Mac because Mac's open ports with NAT-PMP .. a system only Macs have and is apple's replacement to the rest of the world using upnp.

To figure out the IP of the MagicJack and its MAC address is tricky.. Apple does show that info for wireless but not for wired connections.

You might find that info will show up in the log of the TC. You will need to use v5 utility to get it.

But there is a fairly if not exactly straight forward way. (Every device btw should have its MAC address printed on it).

If the TC is at standard IP, ie 10.0.1.1 it will be very uniform in handing out addresses starting from 2 and up.

So lets get rid of everything else.. shut down the network.. everything off. .and start up in order..

Modem ..

TC..

Computer..

MagicJack.

Nothing else. Leave 2min between each start up.

You can pretty well guarantee the computer is 10.0.1.2 and the MagicJack is 10.0.1.3

Ping the IP of the MagicJack in the computer in a terminal..

ping 10.0.1.3

Use control C to stop the ping after a few responses.

Now type the command arp -a

(On Lion or Mountain Lion it should be the same.. but I am not sure).

When I type that command all known IP addresses and their MAC address are shown.

So I plugged my VOIP ATA into the TC.. I know its address.. from elsewhere. I ping it and there it is in the arp table.

arp -a

? (192.168.2.66) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

c470-ip.local (192.168.2.100) at 0:1:e3:77:80:5b on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

nas-server.local (192.168.2.101) at 0:11:41:30:14:bb on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

tardis4.local (192.168.2.104) at b8:c7:5d:cf:63:77 on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

bigpond.local (192.168.2.254) at 0:26:44:a7:4e:be on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

? (192.168.2.255) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet

You have to ping it first otherwise it will not show up.

c470-ip.local (192.168.2.100) at 0:1:e3:77:80:5b on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

Then you have the name of the device.. c470-ip.local

Its IP address. 192.168.2.100

and the MAC address 0:1:e3:77:80:5b to fix in the TC for port forwarding.

If you need btw.. 0 is 00 and 1 is 01 just if the full thing is required.

Bit complicated sorry.. but nothing else comes to mind.

Unless you have a modem router.. if you have a modem router.. put it in router mode and bridge the TC.. then your problems will go away.

I was able to get the IP address but the MAC address using arp -a seems to truncate these addresses. Either the first part of the last part is truncated so you really don't know the exact MAC. Like this ...

? (10.0.1.2) at 6c:33:a9:60:49:f on en0 ifscope [ethernet] see the last part only has one character so I could not assign a DHCP reservation to the MJ. So I added ports 5060 and 5070 for 10.0.1.2 with no resolution - still the same problem. Thanks for your help in getting the IP address. I just found out the ports I was assigning are wrong so I will have to find out which MJ uses and go from there.

Normal voip will use TCP 5060.. but this is probably not SIP..

The easiest way is to get a standard router and use the TC in bridge mode for backups and wireless.

6c:33:a9:60:49:f

The last one is 0f since it is effectively f.. the arp doesn't bother to record it.

A quick google and you will find the port required are far more extensive.

http://www.moushigo.com/index.php/2009/01/29/magicjack-installation-firewall-set up-and-port-settings/

TCP Ports List: 80 (HTTP), 443 (HTTPS)

UDP Ports List: 5060, 5070, 10000-65535

This is the list that somebody experimented and found was required.. of course it is not really the whole range of 10000-65535.. it is just so they have the actual RTP speech ports able to use anything above 10000.
This is why it is better to stick to genuine SIP products and not special bits and pieces that have no recognised standards at all.

Let me suggest instead of port forwarding you simply put the MagicJack in the TC DMZ.
Yes, it does have a DMZ.. go to the Network page and check the default server and put in the IP of the MagicJack.

In apple terms it is called the Default host

I have given up on this. I understand what ports need to be open but I have found no way to assign a static ip to the magicjack. On my.magicjack.com there is no tab that allows you to assign a static ip that I could find anyway and from the last post it doesn't work anyway. Since the Time Capsule will not allow a DMZ for a DHCP address I am not able to solve this issue. How this issue is not resolved by MJ shows their lack of quality products.

Thanks for all that tried to help.
