When I log on to wireless networks with my iPad it shows as logged in in the Wifi area of settings. But when leave there the icons in upper left still show cell signal/lte and not the wireless signal strength icon. Why is this happening and how do I ensure using wireless vs cell coverage?

If you ever need to ensure you're using Wi-Fi and not cellular, you can turn it off:
