Require password immediately turns itself on

Whenever I shut down my Macbook Pro then turn it back on later the 'Require password immediately after sleep or screensaver begins' turns itself on.

This sounds like a corrupt preferences file problem. To fix:

  1. hold down the option key
  2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Library
  3. in Library, find Preferences
  4. in Preferences, find these two files and drag them to the trash:
    1. com.apple.screensaver.plist
    2. com.apple.systempreferences.plist
  5. restart
  6. this will generate new .plist files so you will have to enter your preferences again but I bet the problem will be fixed.
