1 - 8000 is not many photos - I have over 50,000

2 - large iPhoto libraries do not cause Mac preformance issues

3 - how much free space do you have on your hard drive?

4 - the best way to archive photos is to have an additional hard drive (your backup drive and an ther one) and create a new library on it - use iPhoto Library Manager to move photos to it - cna verify tha tyour backup is backing up the second hard drive as well as the main one

I now realize that 8000 is not a lot of photos after reading other posts. When I click to open a file or application, I get a whirling wheel and a delay of 20 secs, sometimes much longer before the file opens. I have over 215 GB available on the hard drive and 2 GB memory. I have a 2TB external drive for back-up. I was thinking about reconnecting an older 250 GB drive just for photos. I am using iPhoto 11, ver. 9.4.3.

Thanks for the response.

Check iPhoto's preferences and turn off all sharing options. Also as<p></p><p style="padding-left: 45px;"><span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> <em style="color: #FF8406; text-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #000000;">OT</em></span></p> a test, disconnect from the internet and launch iPhoto. Does it open faster or slower?
