1 - 8000 is not many photos - I have over 50,000
2 - large iPhoto libraries do not cause Mac preformance issues
3 - how much free space do you have on your hard drive?
4 - the best way to archive photos is to have an additional hard drive (your backup drive and an ther one) and create a new library on it - use iPhoto Library Manager to move photos to it - cna verify tha tyour backup is backing up the second hard drive as well as the main one

How much free space on your hard drive and how much RAM. What else on your iMac is running slow? Can you give examples of the "slowness"? What version of iPhoto are you using?

I now realize that 8000 is not a lot of photos after reading other posts. When I click to open a file or application, I get a whirling wheel and a delay of 20 secs, sometimes much longer before the file opens. I have over 215 GB available on the hard drive and 2 GB memory. I have a 2TB external drive for back-up. I was thinking about reconnecting an older 250 GB drive just for photos. I am using iPhoto 11, ver. 9.4.3.
Thanks for the response.
Check iPhoto's preferences and turn off all sharing options. Also as<p></p><p style="padding-left: 45px;"><span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> <em style="color: #FF8406; text-shadow: 2px 2px 2px #000000;">OT</em></span></p> a test, disconnect from the internet and launch iPhoto. Does it open faster or slower?
More RAM will be the biggest help on speed - today 2GB is pretty much the minimum you can even operate with - more is better

I tried your suggestions and yes iPhoto does open better now. Only the "look for shared Photos" was checked in preferences. I unchecked it and all other choices were already Unchecked, disconnected from the Internet and iPhoto opened quicker and I could open events and photos much quicker.
If you are using Open DNA for DNS services change to a different DNS service - it has been reported that it cna cause this
