Are you referring to an AirPort base station or the built-in AirPort wireless card in your iMac?
Regardless, please check out the following MacFixIt article for some of the reasons that you may be getting a self-assigned IP address.
Another good articlecomes from Cult of Mac.
It is the built in Airport wireless on my iMac. I had just upgraded earlier to 10.6.8 and, as I've seen from many others who upgraded and had the same problem, I am sure the upgrade is the culprit.
However,I finally solved it with a workaround. I just manually set the ip to within the range provided by the provider on the iMac and it is now providing my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad a connection!
Pass the word around to others who are having a similar problem. I'd like to know if it works on ther machines/configurations.

btw, I'm sorry but neither of the two links above were helpful.
I have been trying to solve this problem for sometime. I found an old archived discussion and it was the only thing that worked. It involved moving the SystemPreferences folder to the desktop which I guess disconnects the settings. When I reset the air card it worked.

Be advised that I have and older iBook but it worked.
