How do I forward traffic to an IP Address from a gateway through an extreme?

I have a DVR for a Camera system attached to a WiFi Ethernet device (becuase there is too far a distance between the DVR and Cable Gateway). When it was attached directly attached to the cable modem, I used Port Forwarding to route traffic to the DVR. That worked great. NOW I have to use the WiFi adapter and that is connecting to the Airport Extreme. The Aiport Extreme is connected to that cable modem.

So I understand how to forward traffic from the modem to an IP address (the Extreme's IP perhaps ??) but then how do I send that traffic through the Extreme to the wifi-ethernet adapter connected to the DVR ?

Mac OS X (10.6.3)

You should only need to configure port mapping in the Gateway modem, not the AirPort Extreme as the Extreme should be in bridge mode. If you have your Extreme configured to provide a wireless network, the DVR would still be getting its IP address from the DHCP service in the modem. I would recommend that you configure the DVR for a static local IP address or if your modem provides it use a DHCP reservation to do so instead.

If you are using the WAN/Internet port on the AE that is your problem and that you also need to disable the DHCP server on the AE. Connect fromn LAN port of your cable modem/router to a LAN port on the AE. Then use a Mac connected to the AE to disable the DHCP server. The AE then becomes just a switch with WiFi access point.

If the AE or any apple router is put into bridge mode this is not necessary.. Bridge mode does two things.

It turns off dhcp on the LAN side.

It reassigns the WAN port on the LAN side. In bridge there is no WAN port. There is no WAN.

So simply select bridge as operational mode of the router.. and the rest happens without need manual setup.

The method you talk about is called WAN bypass.. it is also possible and would work.. that is how we bridge other routers without the Airport ability to do it all in one hit.

Thank everyone for being so helpful.

So I have

  • Modem

Static IP x.x.x.25 that port forwarding to x.x.x.69:7000

  • Airport Extreme (all firmware updated)

Connected via ethernet to above cable modem, via standard ethernet port NOT the internet port.

  • I have Bridge Mode enabled on the AE.
  • I have the NetGear Wifi Ethernet Adapter plugged into the DVR

The NetGear adapter is set to obtain address automatically

  • I Have the DVR set to static IP of x.x.x.69 and to listen on port 7000

While on iPhone on Wifi supplied by the AE, I am able to access the DVR (via specifying the .69 address referenced above) , however when I turn-off wifi and use cellular ,and then specify the static ip of the modem it does not connect.

What am I missing ?

The logic of this.. would go..

1. You have not forwarded the port correctly.. but from your first post you had it working when directly connected.. that means the bridge between the AE and the Netgear is simply not passing the packets on that port. But that also seems not possible since the test via a wired connection is working.

While on iPhone on Wifi supplied by the AE, I am able to access the DVR (via specifying the .69 address referenced above)

Can you please test that again. Use your mobile phone just as you did in the later test.. can you now reach the camera?? Did you move the port after this first test was on port 80 I am guessing.

2. So it is the link modem to AE.. since the link works locally from wireless on the AE to the camera.. just not from the internet.

Plug a computer into the cable modem/router by ethernet and test if it can get access to the camera.. if it fails the link modem to AE is failing.. reset the AE and set again.. off (bridged mode) makes no difference which port you use.

Check in your phone again .. if you got an address.. 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x it will not work.. Use a computer that actually gets a public ip.

I am on my mobile phone getting an address of 10...83 through the router 10...1.

Then the DVR setup on 10...69 IS accessible.

When I switch my wifi off (on the mobile phone) and I use the ip address (23…94) of the modem w/ port specification I do not get connected.

When I plug DIRECTLY into the Cable Modem and get an IP address of 10…53, via (Mac OS X) I CAN access the DVR again with ip of 10…69.

When I use WIFI (via the AE) I get an IP Address of 10…44 and CAN access the DVR as well.

I have also confirmed traffic is port forwarding to .69:7000 as per the port specified on the DVR.

So with all that it is confirmed, I tried it again and and still not working...

THEN I reset the AE, Resset the Wifi Adapter, Reset the DVR and updated Firmwares, started with the basics outline from everyone and IT'S WORKING!!

I believe it was actually all the AE and requiring a reset on that device.

Thank you again for all the help, this was a fun challenge!
