Sounds like the partition table is damaged. Reboot holding Command Option R to boot into network recovery, then run Disk Utility. Select the Sandforce icon and then over to the right side of the Disk Utility window you should see two tabs: First Aid and Partition. Select partition. You should now see Partition Layout with a menu saying Current. Click on Current and select 1 Partitoin. Click on Options and select Guid Partition Table, and then click on Apply.

If all that worked the drive partition will be created and then you'll be able to download and install the OS. If it failed, the SSD is damaged and will need to be replaced.

3rd party SSD Sandforce? or Apple?

And do you have a disk restore image or clone?

There are two things DU will repair or check: the top level of the device, like "Samsung120" or something as well as the system user partion "My Macintosh"

But you have to click on the disk and on Repair or Erase or Partition. Or on Restore also to image the SSD to a sparse disk image or another disk volume.

SSDs should have 11% setaside for provisioning and spare cells, 20% or more free for trim and writes until it is trimmed for garbage collection. And you should with an SSD be doing regular maintenance, backups, and running Disk Utility Repair on a regular basis.

Clone the system, boot from the clone, and erase and restore is best option.

Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy

ait.

Looks like Apple messed up on this one:

Correction, "messing up" would be:

1. not verifying a problem with a limited number of SSD and finding a solution

2. not providing great cust. service and fixing any problems out of warranty with new replacement drives.

3. not issuing a release that a fault is found, and covering up a problem known to exist.

4. not providing refunds to those who already bought replacement SSD.

Since Apple did the OPPOSITE of 1thru 4, they did not "mess up".

If a $300,000,000 satellite built by the smartest geeks on earth can "have a problem", I dont expect more out of a fine Apple product.

Technology contains absurd complexity, with that territory , things can happen. 😊

1. Success of Data Recovery is not SSD/non-SSD dependant.

2. Gillware Inc. has a high data recovery sucess rate on Intel SSD's. But they have 0 success with Toshiba SSD because the company doesn't cooperate with them and doesn't provide them with knowledge they need to recover the data (Encryption algorithms, RAID, Firmware architecture, etc)
